Markings on conning towers

I was wondering whether somebody would have more information on the conning tower markings such as those exhibited on this photo of U353.
From some interrogation reports I have read on other boats - these were called "Yard Markings". What purpose did they serve?
I have another photo of U353 at the time of her sinking and it seems that this marking was not present at the time of her sinking.
Any information would be appreciated.
Regards,
Tristan
