Hi JD,
I have been reading this thread with interest. It is many a long year since I was in Hamburg, Kiel etc. and you have brought back some very fond memories of being at an International Submariners meeting in the former city and a trip to Helgoland.
Gudmundur was right when he suggested posting here - all the guys are extremely helpful [Hallo VEK :-))]
There are some good eating places and watering holes all over Germany so I know you will fare well. Don't know how the Black Stuff will taste there unless you can find a real Irish Pub. There are many here who can recommend excellent German beers though.
Happy St. Patrick's Day and enjoy your trip. Would like to hear something of it when you return.
Good Luck, Best Wishes and, as our late lamented friend Barry would have said "Do Chara"

PS A bit far from any U-boats but I can recommend the Kilford Arms in Kilkenny. Lovely night club, beautiful dining room and the locals.........well, they are Irish :-))
