Dear Francesco,
Many thanks for the information on S. 4 and Amendolia. I should be ashamed of myself as I have your book "La Marina e l'8 Settembre".
I have also "Siamo fieri di voi" by Capone, this is indeed an excellent book on Italian submarines in World War Two (is he related to C.F. Teodorico Capone ho was in charge of Gruppo Sommergibili Brindisi in June 1940?).
However in his book he only mentions C.C. d'Amato as the commander of MILLO and although d'Amato was her commander at the time of her loss, he was not her only commander. I have the following taken from her "Specchio" and "Rapporti di missione" at the Ufficio Storico:
C.C. Benedetto Luchetti: 1-19.8.1941 (while the submarine was being completed) at Monfalcone.
C.C. Francesco Murzi: 20-8-1941 to 30-11-1941 (including first transport mission to Bardia).
T.V. Federico Tamburini: 30-11-1941 to 13-12-1941 (including second transport mission to Bardia and Benghazi).
C.C. Francesco Murzi: 14-12-1941 to 28-12-1941 (including third transport mission trip to Tripoli). He had a car accident in Tripoli was replaced by:
C.C. Carlo Zanchi: 28-12-1941 to 31-12-1941 (return trip from Tripoli to Taranto).
T.V. Federico Tamburini: 01-01-1942 to 04-02-1942 (including fourth transport mission to Tripoli).
C.C. Vincenzo d'Amato: 05-02-1942 to her loss on 14-03-1942.
Quite complicated!
Italian submarines have a very interesting history not very well known outside of Italy and I am trying hard to learn it.
Grateful thanks again and my best wishes,
Platon
