Hi Don

The distance on the Great Circle is about 1830 nautical miles. At 10 knots it would take about 8 days to cover that distance.

As far as we know KAIMATA made the North Atlantic passage in 12 days, arriving at Halifax on 11 March. The ship could not have been in 60°N/19°W on 7 March, this would mean she needed 8 days to reach this position fairly close to the UK and then covered the rest of the voyage in 4 days - an impossible average speed of 19 knots.

To clear this up we need the ship log to know where and when the encounter took place. I will order a digital copy of it from the National Archives.

Many damage and repair reports are also held by the National Archives but as the ship was repaired in the USA they can probably be found in the NARA: [www.archive.org]

Best regards
Rainer
