U-boat hats question

I got this captians u-boat visor hat from a guy through the internet, its pretty much the most accurate replica hat I have come across so far, (including the ones all over ebay) and I did previously own one I got from ebay, and had a question about metal parts in the hat. both ones I have/had, have this flat metal stem going up the front of the hat on the inside, like some sort of stiffener, and after seeing Das boot, seeing how 'crushed' and flat topped his hat was, I am really confused as to if the origional hats had this metal stiffener thing inside the front. is it a late war thing? or did the captains take it out after getting the hat? or something the modern manufactures do??

I'm really confused on this simple little thingy lol.
