<HTML>RK = Ritterkreuz (Knights Cross of the Iron Cross). S= Schwerten (Swords). B= Brillianten (Diamonds). EK = Eisern Kreuz (Iron Cross) (that dates back to 1813)

KVK is that Kriegsverbandkreuz (a civilian award as well as military {?})

In \'Das Boot\' and in real life the chief would probably not have been awarded anything. It is the job of the LI to get the boat going again.

\"In the face of the enemy\" means just that. A ship sailing serenly acros the Atlantic alone is not in the face of the enemy. When the enemy is near and attack is threatened well........ same thing in the air and on land when you think of it
