Romper?

While on the ''Planter'' (a U-boat victim) page, my attenion was drawn to this extract: "romper from convoy SLS-53". After looking in three British English dictionaries at 'romper', I could not get past "an item of child's clothing". I have looked on this site, at various pages, including the glossary, all with no success.
Does anyone know what is meant by the term 'romper?
