John,

Looking at the portside vent patterns - in the photo (from the bow towards the stern) 2 vents - grouping 2 and 4 vents. This would indicate Type IXC or IXC40. To further identify the boat, the remaining group of vent patterns (the long series near the water line) would have to be shown more clearly.

Also if the railing (lifeline stanchion assembly) was shown in better detail, this would also aid in the ID of the boat/series.

Vom Original zum Modell: Uboottyp IX C: Eine Bild und Plandokumentation by Fritz Köhl, Axel Niestlé shows the configuration possibilities for the IX and IXC series on pages 17 and 26.

Bottom line - photo on page 21 is definitely not a Type IXB.
