<HTML>I believe axis submarine operations in the Red Sea were terminated when the Italian East African naval base at Massawa (Mitsiwa, Eritrea) was captured by British forces. Following the loss of that base on the Red Sea, shipping through the Red Sea was still subject to attack around the Suez and Gulf of Aden approaches without risking two-way transit through the Bab el Mandeb narrows. =AL=</HTML>
