Having seen that sorry excuse of a Hollywood movie, I agree with your assessment completely and have copied it down on paper to read in the long bleak winter nights still left and fall about laughing as I did the first time I read your critique. It would have been better if Mostow had planned a straightforward comedy, like "Operation Petticoat" and saved us all the price of a cinema ticket. There are times when I laugh out loud when I read the novel "Das Boot", but not because of the absurdity of the situation, but because of the inherent humour, of which Mr Mostow seems to be completely devoid.
