<HTML>Re "Black Hawk Down" I haven't seen it myself but have read a review in the Grauniad, which says in effect dear old Ridley manages to overlook certain aspects of the Somali incident (like the fact that the despot the troops are searching for used to have the full endorsement of the USA) the way the Somalis are depicted, (with aggressive, rap style music every time they are in shot, compared to softer string quartet stuff when the Yanks appear) and a repeat of Private Ryan in the death departments. Johnny Foreigner gets blasted to eternity without so much as a grunt, whereas the soldiers manage a few last choking utterances, and presumably a farewell look at their wife's photo.
I agree that this is unfair as I haven't even seen the film I am castigating but it does seem endemic of US war film production of late.
BTW, rumours are coming in that Spielberg's latest war extravaganza is to be about a group of GI commandos (what else?) liberating a Greek island. Details are sketchy but apparently is based on fact. The Yanks *were* on said island but not until *1946*.</HTML>
