<HTML>Les,
In short, the deeper a boat goes down the heavier it becomes in the surrounding water.
When a boat dives and remains under the water the objective it to maintain neutral buoyancy as best you can. The bow planes assist the boat in maintaining neutral position as the boat vacillates between positive and negative buoyancy during the course of its under water travel.
The boat first takes on water at the beginning of the dive to become heavier. As the boat goes deeper the water pressure compresses the air remaining in tanks, making the boat even heavier, therefore excess water needs to be pumped out once at the desired depth. If you have negative buoyancy you have to be able to compensate for the excess weight by use of the bow planes until you able to rid the excess water in the tanks.
There has been other discussions on the dive process and about boat buoyancy in the forums before. I suggest the use of the search feature for more detailed information.
Hope this helps.
