This is the forum for Movie and Film discussions. Again, our topic is naval warfare in WWII for the most part.

<HTML>A couple of comments from reading this forum. First, the Nummer Eins W.O. (from Mexico) in Das Boot was clean-shaven in representing the younger idealistic National Socialist. There is one scene in the film (Director's Cut) where he is dictating to another crewman a description of the ideal "German Lieutenant." As others stated, the beard growth seen in the film was natural as the film was made sequentially over about a period of one year. I've noted Juergen Prochnow in a recent film, "The Replacement Killers" (1998) in which he is again clean-shaven. You also will note that in U-571 the crew is fairly young, and the Captain has a beard as do many of the crew. A new book by Jak Mallmann Showell (son of a U-boot Fahrer) shows many previously unpublished photos from the Cuxhaven Archive of men in various stages of beard growth ("Wolfpacks at War", Ian Allen Publishing, 2002). There is a pretty big difference between what an 18 year old grows and a 30 year old.
In regard to bolts. German subs were welded--Japanese were riveted. However, the makers of Das Boot and U-571 used as their guidepost the U-boat at the Museum for Science and Industry in Chicago. I don't know what type that boat is, but I suspect it is a VIIC which was the most common sub. Anyone who has seen that boat can settle the question of bolts used to connect pipes within the boat.</HTML>
