In 1952, as a part of "Operation Ivy," the first thermonuclear, or H-bomb, device was detonated. Utilizing liquid hydrogen and weighing 65 tons, the device , code-named "Mike," had incredible destructive.power. a report on the Bravo incident given by a special joint committee to the congress of Micronesia in February 1973, gives a vivid description of the bomb's power.
"......located in a building on Elughelab Island of Eniwetok Atoll. When "Mike" was
detonated, not only did the island disappear, it was "vaporised" into calcium oxide and sucked up with the cloud, but the blast also gouged a hole one mile in diameter
and 175 feet deep in the reef. Probably more than 100 million tons of material were dislodged and thrown into the air, great waves were seent out that rolled over nearby islands, and a huge mushroom cloud rose to a height of 130,000 feet (25 miles) in just 15 minutes. "Mike" was indeed a superdevice, estimated to have a yield of about 5 megatons or equivalent to 250 (Hiroshima-type) atomic bombs."
Now that's what I call "vapourization".......
No non-nuclear bomb or depth charge ever had the capability to "vapourize" a submerged U-boat/submarine, NO MATTER HOW LARGE IT WAS.
