Movies and Films
This is the forum for Movie and Film discussions. Again, our topic is naval warfare in WWII for the most part.

<HTML>He was based on an actual officer, who in real life (as chronicled in the book, Das Boot) was responsible for a major screw-up which failed to turn into an overwhelming disaster only because of mechanical failure. If Buchheim's movie script had been chosen rather than Petersen's, you would have seen it all in living Farben!
The character in the movie is somewhat different from the one in the book, and I think he does become more likeable as the film goes along. I like him best when he asks the Captain, whle they're sitting on the ocean floor, "Do you think we'll be able to surface?" It's the first time he ever shows any fear, and the first time we see him looking unkempt; in other words, he's becoming one of the gang. I prefer to think that the movie character survived the movie-bombing at the end. After all, it's not like we see him being evil at any time; he's just an outsider, like the Bibelforscher or, indeed, Werner.
The actor's name is Hubertus Bengsch, and he has continued working in film, not as a star but as (for one example) Richard Gere's voice when movies are dubbed into German. Credit Cate for this tidbit! He does a lot of charity work, and seems to be a really nice guy.
Cheers,
