At the time, he was LtzS Werner Herrmann, and you can find his details in the Commanders section, because he later on got a command of his own: it shows, that apart from other assorted qualities, the Captain was a very good teacher by example.
While in the book he's supposed to have been on board U 96 for longer, the truth is that he was sent as IIWO to the boat at the same time as Leutnant Sonderführer Buchheim, namely just before the 7th patrol of the boat. Because of his short stature he was sometimes called affectionately 'Herrmännchen' by his captain, and he also participated in the post-war get-togethers.
