Horst Hamm was the U-boat's first ever IWO, and his details are also in the Commanders section, because he also was given an command of his own, achieved some successes but was then lost. He was responsible for quite a lot of hits against ships, because as IWO he was in charge of the surface attacks on ships, the ones carried out with the U-Boot-Ziel-Optik, and he achieved long shots, and shots in storms. I bet he was an officer H.L-W was sorry to see go.
In this respect also, Gerhard Groth was a lousy shot: on the seventh patrol, the one described in the book, they carry out a multiple attack against three ships, he shoots four torpedoes and manages to hit only one ship. And the others were registered in the hydrophone as active, therefore not duds, but still they missed. On the whole, the oh-so-proper German-Mexican was more a parade-ground officer than a useful IWO.
