While I think there's not much to like in a person who quotes Lüth's infamous address to the U-boatmen (albeit anachronistically), I must agree that he tries to do the best he can. Unfortunately, that isn't much!
The real person was ObLtzS, Gerhard Groth, and you can look him up in the Commanders section. He was responsible for a major screw-up late in the cruise, involving a huge Spanish liner. He was promptly got rid of at the end of the patrol and was later made Kommandant of his own boat. However, he was also not included in the post-war get-togethers of the captain and crew of U 96, while Herrmann (the garden gnome) was invited to every one. Of course, since he lived in Mexico (he did get to become the plantation manager, after all), it wasn't exactly a hop skip and jump from Germany.
I hope this helps as far as the real person is concerned.
