<HTML>Hello Mr. Watchofficer, (17 years),
come on do not give us this “bellony” of a “cry-baby-German, Nazi - black and white only.
First of all you become an officer only, if you went to pretty thorough education.
Secondly Knowledge is Power.
And thirdly as German you got to face the gruesome truth that the Nazis were a bunch of idiotic and terrible criminals, who committed in the name of German people the most horrendous crimes known so far by history. On the other hand don’t forget not all the Germans were Nazis.
So for your education, also as a young German you got to sit down on your butt and start reading books about German history preferable both German and Anglo-American Authors and this will of course take some time. The comments on the uboat-net obviously can give you a glimpse only of what it was to be a German in those days. Here are a few suggest books for you to read:
Golo Mann: Eine Jugend in Deutschland (über die Weimarer Zeit)
Joachim Fest: Hitler
Sebastian Haffner: Anmerkungen zu Hitler
Eugen Kogon: So war der SS-Staat
Bernd Engelmann: Wie wir die Nazizeit erlebten
Shirer: The Rise and Fall of the Third Reich
John Tolland : Hitler
Ian Kershaw : Hitler
Allan Bullock Stalin and Hitler
Herman Wouk: War and Remembrance
The World at War
TAYLOR : The Anatomy of the Nuremberg Trials
Tuchman: The Guns of August (WWI)
The Biographies from William Manchester about Churchill, also from Manchester The Arms of KRUPPS
William Manchester: The Glory and the Dream, a narrative History about the USA from 1932 – 72
Just to name a few.
You can discuss the history of your country only, f.e. with foreigners, when you know about it plus of course the course of history of other countries. So get the show on the road, yes it might be difficult, but the more you know the easier it is going to get. Plus it is probably not as much as difficult as it is time-consuming. But with your 17 years you have all the time in world. If need some further help just holler.
Sincerely Yours
