<HTML>Germans are very, very good at dubbing. When translating dialogue, they even take into account (insofar as is possible) the way the actor's mouth moves when shaping words. Some of the actors in Das Boot--Jürgen Prochnow, Herbert Grünemeyer, and Hubertus Bengsch, among others-- did their own dubbing. Naturally there are still bound to be mismatches--as when you hear Prochnow say (what must be quite difficult for a German to get his mouth around) "Depth charges!" while his lips are clearly shaping the word "Wasserbomben!"

It's just a pity that the translation was carried over into the realm of censorship, as though American audiences would faint in horror at hearing what young sailors really say. We don't flinch at watching living bodies torn into shreds, but we're going to have apoplexy if we hear someone's racy tale of shoreside sex? Oh, please!
