Petersen was speaking in general terms, not about the Type IX specifically. Although the Type IX and Type VII differ somewhat in internal and external size and arrangements, they are much more similar than they are different. In the broad sense, either type of boat gives a pretty good impression of what the other is like.
If you study the movie carefully, however, you will see that the movie set is unquestionably a Type VII. There is one long shot -- and amazing shot, cinematically -- that tracks all the way through the length of the boat, from stern to bow, and it's clearly a Type VII. If one is so inclined, one can follow every shot in the movie on a set of plans.
