"The interior shots had to convey the confined space of the hull which meant that a camera tripod could be used rarely. The resourceful cameraman therefore had a hand-held, gyro-stabilized device built that allowed him to hold his camera steady while running forward, following the crew through all the compartments to the Torpedo Room---a maneuver employed during the war to make the boat tilt forward faster
for diving. Wearing elbow pads and a crash helmet, he even managed to dive through two bulkhead hatches while underway."

Another excerpt from "FILMING DAS BOOT" by Captain Hans-Joachim Krug's interview with U.S. Naval Institute's "PROCEEDINGS" magazine,
June 1996 issue.

A friend, Master Captain Jerry Steurnagel of Bonita Springs, FL owns a
45-foot fiberglass replica of "U-571", which was Produced by Universal Studios for the filmiong of "U-571"........

It will be towed on November 11th in the Veterans Day parade in Cape
Coral, FL

Later,
