Mine-clearing cables were attached to the tips of the leading edges of
the bow planes, and some Jap mine mooring cables did "scrape" along the fleet boat's hulls. An olde submate of mine (only 83) can vouch for
that on the last wartime patrol of the USS TORSK (SS-423). She is credited with sinking the last Jap combat vessel of WWII, one day after
the Jap surrender, using a MK 27 "Cutie" passive-acoustic 19" diameter
swim-out "pickle" from ATR.
The boat had the new FM (QLA) mine-detection sonar mounted topside on the starboard side forward of the torpedo retrieving kingpost mount-
ing socket., and they could "see" how close the mines actually were to
the sides of the boat. Many "skid-marks" occurred during these
minefield transits.
