Dear all,
I just wanna say, that I´m very pleased to read all the positive comments about “Das Bootâ€! It´s good to know that this outstanding movie isn´t only very popular in Germany but also highly respected in the rest of the world.
On the other side I´m glad that I´m not the only one who dislikes this horrific movie named “U-571â€. Apart from the fact that this film is a pure offense for all u-boat-men, it´s Jonathan Mostow`s and the producer`s ignorance and foolery that makes me so angry. I really can´t understand, how one can spend $90 million bucks for a u-boat-film without having any specialized knowledge about this part of history or u-boat-technology and without consulting any specialists.
I`m sure Wolfgang Petersen only got a fraction of Mostow´s budget when he made “Das Bootâ€, but nevertheless he largely kept the facts und created a masterpiece that – thanks to the wonderful actors – stands alone forever. As Ian Stapley said “Das Boot†is still (and will always be) the yardstick by which all other sub films are measured.
It´s simply a shame but typical for the arrogancy and ignorance of some hollywood-directors and –producers, who dare to falsify history and don´t care about realism. But the worst thing is that millions of people, that don´t feel in with u-boats, will consider the events in the film as the truth. I know this happens everyday, but isn´t it sad that a few powerful men are using their money just to get round false rumours, although they could do better?
Best regards
