Happy New Year to you Meg from Caledonia!.In the American WW2 Magazine for Jan/Feb 2005 U-406 Enginering officer, Rudi Toepfer , in a long interview hasa pop at the 'Das Boot movie.
Herr Toepfer says' I have two objections to the movie-THe first was when the German officers were celebrating a skipper receiving the 'Ritterkreuz' Two officers got drunk abnd collapsed in the bathroom...#NO naval officer from any nation would sink so low.'
Herr Toepfer also called the scene in 'Das Boot' when the Skipper of 'Das Boot' pulled a pistol to allay panic in a crew member nonsense, saying that was like 'Hogan's Heroes'-the dreadfully stereotypical(of Germans)1960's American 'comedy' tv programme...'A typical day on a U-Boat patrol was boring...'concludes Herr Toepfer
P.S. Meg, became a grandad for the third time on December 4th 2004-Little Joseph David weighed in at 6lbs 4ozs in Stirling, Scotland...Hasta La Vista Baby! as your present Californian Governor used to say.
