Hello Steve Robert,
I’m not sure I understand your query. I far as I remember Der Alte und Werner had a discussion prior to when Der Alte disclosed to Werner and the LI that his request to get a substitute for his LI was rejected by the BdU, about the LI, “ist fertig mit den Nerven†meaning the LI being a nervous wrack, er muß von Bord, he must leave the ship, and you Lt. Werner will accompany him; it easier for two to cross the border and we (the German embassy) have agents who’ll take you safely across the border. So that discussion must have taken place prior before the boat entered VIGO, where Der Alte was accompanied by his Obersteuermann on the conning tower to get the boat safely to the WESER.
