Maybe what Herr Toepfer objected to was the physical squalor and indignity of "Thomsen's" collapse, not the weakness of character displayed. "Burying oneself under a mountain of girls" sounds rakish and devil-may-care (not to mention virile), the sort of thing that one's buddies would speak of with awe. No-one is likely to speak admiringly about a fellow-officer lying on the floor in a puddle of p--- and p---!
