Powers on a B-24D from the 2037th A/S Wing attacked in DH4265 a U-boat with 4 Mark 37 650lbs and took photos of the incident. so it's clear that it was not a german u-boat. none of them was in BF on the 19th only U-562 on the way from Brest to Lorient. So either it was a torpedoboat, an italian u-boat or as you say a vivid imagination.

U-109 saw a u-boat already on november 17th and not on november 19th. Bleichrodt thought it could be an italian one. I didnt find any submarine contact on november 19th in the KTB's of the boats which where in the vicinity of La Rochelle which corresponds to the grid BF. There is no precise location of this attack?

So he supposed that she was hit by his torpedo shot but missing a tanker of 8000 tons as he clearly heard a detonation.
