Hello Theresa and All, well, the British version of spoken language of a German word is kind of interesting; it sounds a little bit like a German Bavarian accent. Anyway the sole origin of the term used in Das Boot was Kaptitänleutnant and was in that respect not necessarily related originally to using “Herr” as form of addressing the Captain of the boat. To address somebody in German wit

Based on the fact, a RAF – plane (meidet – avoided, maybe a typo; meldet reported) reported an attack in grid BF 8350, and except/besides U 116 no other German U-boat was present even close to said position, it has to be concluded, U116 was sunk by this plane. All hands, 55, lost their life. At this time U116 was on patrol for 20 days and had supplied 6 combat boats.

Hallo HWM, you are right; well I would not take the film as Das Boot reloaded, but that the English script-writer gave it fair try “in as much as he was trying to reflect via dialogues what the different characters were thinking, feeling and expressing concerning this very strange/weird situation in the time of war in 1942.” Hope you and your family are doing fine, All the Best VEK

Hello Matthias, I really don’t know; probably the sequel was installed in style of Das Boot to make it a bit more thrilling. On the other hand, Hartenstein wasn’t sure he wouldn’t be attacked after all, so it would have made some sense to test-dive in case of a possible sudden attack.

Hello Ms. Movidora, as to your comment of this movie please check: I think this preview is pretty fair, after having watched the film. And from my German perspective the English script-writer did a fair job in as much as he was trying to reflect via dialogues what the different characters were thinking, feeling and expressing concerning this very strange/weird situation in the time of w

Well, I really don`t think so. Schalke 04 a soccer team from the Gelsenkirchen arear was very famous in those days in the German first devision and I think Peterson just wanted to show that the people on the boat were provided with news, at least on sports, that kept them up to date.

Hallo Theresa, just got back from Colorado with some jet lag and trying to get back adjusted to our local time. I pretty sure that Sander speaks English because I believe he acted in one or the other American/English movie. Guessing you all are recovering from the festivities of this royal wedding and starting this week with another princess in the Windsor-books. It is still amazing

Hello Theresa, maybe you want to check this link: I am not sure but I believe it was reported that LWB had a heart condition which finally lead to his death. As to your post on Spencer Tracy as starring LWB in DAS BOOT, btw very well reasoned, I think PETERSEN was very much aware of the fact that this movie was German matter in so far as it was telling or trying to bring across Germa

Dear Mr. Heimann, thank you for citing the German café in Denver although I believe I’ll skip it, because while I am over there the American food is to be enjoined. Bacon and eggs hush browns etc and then in evening all the different meals served by Italian, Mexican, Thailand and other “exotic” kitchens, actually at the Fort Collins (ca. 90km from Denver) area where my fo

Dear Herr Heimann, Becks is still quite popular in Northern Germany and still somehow identified with sailors, sea the wide ocean etc. I am now living in Nuremberg and have no problem getting Becks-beer. The USA is a great country but the beer over there, well to be polite tastes differently, as a matter of fact very differently. I’ll be in Denver in April to see my daughter an

Rich bachelors should be heavily taxed. It is not fair that some men should be happier than others. Oscar Wilde (1854 - 1900) But then probably Oscar Wilde did not know what he was talking about as to this special subject. As to your inquire about the breeches/jodhpurs according to my old men (97), being an officer in WWII, officers of all branches of the Armed Forces were obliged t
