It has been conclusively proven that CAP could never have sunk a U-B0at. There is no likely means of evaluating damage nor assist claims.

My deceased father served on S-boats in late WWII. A good look at S Boats' ops can be had in Bill Ruhe's book : War in the Boats. I can be contacted outside the U-Boat net. At rthomas@jacksonville.edu Regretfully It will be a month before I am free to answer any questions.

Also the USN system was able, over time to estabish the zig zag pattern which had consequences in the much used end around maonouver, by the USN, but largely tactically preempted, and design limited for the U-Boats.

The role of Ultra intelligence in the "luck" of WWII is vastly underrated.

Other factors that skew the data. In the Norwegian campaign the German dud rate was near 90% for magnetic variation in shallow water. Early in the war US policy called for submerged sound attacks without periscope observation. It was not the Skipper choice that determined his effectivness. Early in 1943 the USN used a 4 torpedoe spread as the standard attack on merchant ships. The US policy also

The factors you are trying to measure changed over time For example Submarine COs aggressiveness changed with ther replacment of combat experienced commanders. There are books already published on the subject. (I'll get back to you with the title after the election) Changed for the Americans with experience in effective AASW etc. What I am telling you is that historians have alredy got bette

The gross numbers of failures aren't going to tell you nearly as much as numbers by type of torpedoe and type of exploder and where and when ( magnetic back ground noise and sea states in particular) all added together. Your trying to apply data principes at an inappropriate level and it will drive you crazy because you are measuring the wrong things. There have already been significant disc

If memory serves there are multiple refernces to surface navy grid, KM grid, major ship grid, supply tanker grids, schnell boot and U-boat grids each being constructed on the likely basis of enemy capture. It is further reasonable to assume that the Germans changed the grid when they found out about surrendered U-boats or ships (Altmark & HMS Graph cases in point). Is there any definitive re

Understanding attitudes existant in WWII people is pretty well explained in "War Without Mercy Race & Power in the Pacific War" by John W. Dower ISBN 0-394-75172-8 (pbk). Their are enough cross references to the European situation that the book is of general interest and particularly well footnoted. I further offer that fewer Japanese were tried because there were fewer accusers ali

Dropped from an airplane in front of the submarine's future path it would be a lead collision intercept and is still several orders of magnitude a better weapon than depth charges.

By late WWII the ability of US subs to shoot was so much better than the average U-boat, because the range was solved perfectly by the SN radar ( periscope Mounted single pulse 3MM wave length. target speed resolution was within a tenth of a knot on Us boats when the Germans were still eyeball estimating speed . The torpedoes carried verses the % hits is very revealing. The allies had full techi

The Japanese did succeed in hunting one US sub 's air search radar (from memory SJ) to destruction (again from memory the Salmon) but one out of 400 is not a war winner. The US boats sank far more Japanese subs with EW than the axis forces combined.

The allies developed an acoustic anti submarine Torpedoe that the German's apparently never caught on to. The torpedoe had several names to keep the secret variously "cutie" and Mk24 mine depending on lauch platform. It was operational before the introduction of the Sound King, which only operated in the surface enviornment. I suspect the numbers of Torpedoes that hit was not a fu

I sdtrongly suggest Axel Niestle's book "GERMAN U-Boat Losses in WWII" will have the best current information. The footnotes have a lot of detail and the book is autoritative. ISBN 1-55750641-8 At least in the states it is available on ILL. I similary am looking for U-boatsd that might have been sunk or damaged by Civil Air Patrol Coastal Patrol Bases. Likewise any proof of CAP

Thanks for your essentially correct analysis. The reason the Uboats suceeded off our coast was, they operated on the surface at night when the defence, including CAP, had no capability. Could you join CAP's efforts to have thier WWII sevices recognized by a Congressional Gold medal just as the WASPs and several similar groups have been recognized? Please pass the request to your Senators,

JANAF did not report any. Those attacks that I know about the pilot admitted killing a whale. You can expect publication of the definitive article on this subject in the near future by the Ohio Wing Historian. It is lagely going to be his research and all his writting. I believe I will be able to support all his conclusions but I have not read the draft. Though we have comaired notes and done par

Are there any German records of the contacts and or engagements between U-boats and US Civil Air Patrol Coastal Patrol aircraft? When debriefed after WWII by allied intelligence Admiral Doenitz is reputed to have given "those damn little yellow airplanes" (IE CAP) as his primary reason for withdrawing his boats from US coastal waters. Given the weak construction of the aircraft and t
