What I have come across are two different versions of what happened prior to the Clyde incident. (1) U 111 arrived then when approaching U 68, her 1st

Hi Stefaan, i would have thought after the war, and the allies dictated what the size of the Naval personnel was going to be, all the men not involved would have been returned to civilian life and for those retained, once the Kreigsmarine was replaced with the birth of the new German Federal Navy, then all previous contracts would become null and void, if not before? - john

Hi Vidar, according to Clay Blair, U 715 was forced to the surface by 4 D/C and during exchange of small arms fire 3 Germans were killed while the A/C was fatally hit and ditched. the 16 from the 45 U-boat survivors were rescued by Air Sea rescue launches, while 3 of the 8 aircrew also died, the others being picked up like the Germans. hi Mark, thankyou for bringing this incident up, that could account for the times recorded in Dr Rohwer's book Axis Sub Successes (1999) page 67. He states, the U 203 attack on the Varangberg and Avoveta began at 2233 on the 25th with hits reported at 0031. for the Cortes the attack time is given as 0036 which is the same time given for the U 124 attack times on Petrel and Lapwing, but in th

Hi Rainer,in U-boat Commanders of WW2 by Busch & Roell on the 4th photo page there is a photo of Kplt Franz Gramitzky of U 138. Although he is bearded after a patrol there is a strong resemblance to the photo in question and U 138 a type IID was in the 24th & 25th U-Flotilla from 1940. - Regards john
