This ship being part of French convoy 3.K (Casablaca -Brest) June 1940,was making for Le Harve, but due to the German armies rapid advance she was directed first to Brest and the Belle Ile, but she was lost to U 65 before arriving there. Did these warnings originate from the ports she was heading for or another source? john

Hi Mark thankyou for the report, as you probably guessed i mixed up her demise with another ship that i am currently working on, she being the British Premier, sunk by U 65, reportedly sunk as part of convoy SLs.60. However I cannot find any record of her reaching Freetown from Table Bay,nor sailing in SLs60 or SL60, and also her reported loss position, putting her some 200 miles SW of Freetown,

Hi Mike, Unless 63 should be 61 we are stuck, another problem with this ship, she is reported as being with convoy ONs92, however in Hague's site there is no record of her arriving at Freetown from Table Bay or sailing from there, and the position of her loss putting her 200 miles to the SW of Freetown suggests she was not in the convoy as well? - regards john

Another incident in which Fischer did himself no favour, when U 109 was returning, across the Bay of Biscay, a lookout reported seeing a periscope, Fischer apparently discarded the report having not witnessed it himself, and did not have the posible sighting reported, leaving some crew members ill at ease. U 74 with some Bismarck survivors on board was following, and when a radio signal from her

1075. U 124
During August 1941, U 124 is reported to be involved against convoy HG.69, however, in Rohwer & Hummelchen, the date sailing (Aug 9th) and the escorts encountered 9Deptford and Convolvulus) all match with convoy HG.70. Did U 124 see action against both convoys? - john

Hi Platon, in Tennant's 'Merchant Ship losses' He states the 61 men lost, but as the boat with the captain plus 3 crew were rescued by the merchant SS Batna and landed at Takoradi, while another 20 ? !st officers boat were recued by the Cabo Villano and landed at Santos, no mention of a third boat making land. Any view of Batna in this puzzle? - john

This ship was sunk on March 21st 1941, some of her survivors were rescued by the SS Batna and taken on to Takoradi. The date I find this ship arriving there after March 21st is May 23rd, which seems a long time. Is the actual date Batna found the survivors known? Regards john
