In Samuel E Morison, he states that U 751 laid 12 mines of Charleston at the end of July 1942, but I have that she was sunk on the 17th NW of Cape Finisterre, also U 213 laid 15 mines off St Johns, Newfoundland on May 14th 1942, I have she placed an agent ashore at Bay of Fundy, and then joined the Pfadfinder group, whereafter she operated without success off New York before returning. if these bo

Hi, I think it was the name given to boats in the Biscay ports, including the schnorkel fitted U-boats,for ops in the English Channel, against the Allied landings. They, sailed June 6th, and were to lay off Brest and bordeaux, keeping at sea, as not to be trapped in port, and to be nearer the Channel for a faster response. However, allied air craft prevented any serious attacks from them. U 212,hav

Regarding the transfer of replacement boats, what was the reason that boats already assigned for the North Atlantic, and supplied as such,be diverted within a day or two of sailing to the med?. Examples, after U 433 was lost 16.11.41, U 95 which had sailed on 19.11.41, was only diverted on the 22nd. When she was lost on the 28th, U 74 and U 77,which sailed on December 9th and 10th, were both diver

Hi Rainer, thankyou for that, in fact she, being repaired at the end of April 40, sailed in May,with OA-147 to Aruba, returned June, to the Clyde with HX-49. Sailed July in OB-186, back to Aruba, returned August, with HX-69 to Barry Roads, sailed October back in OB-222, but returned, engine trouble, to re-sail in OB-223,to finally return November, with HX-87, and after repair continued throughout

This ship, is recored as being torpedoed by the U 104, although U 104, was sunk soon after and did not have time to claim the attack, with all other U-boats returning, none of which none made a claim, her attack was given to U 104, and that she made the Clyde under her own power. However, according to 'Naval-history.net' She was damaged by a mine and disabled, after which she was towed b

Quite right Uwe, I think one of the earlier Star Trek episodes, they put a man in with the debris, but to put a live man in a torpedo tube, and for him to survive all that, pressure without breathing aid, then make it to the surface alive, i agree belongs in the Twilight zone. john

1010. U 59
Before the declaration of war, several boats sailed in anticipation of war, so to be commence hostilities immediately, U 59 sailed on August 29th, from Heligoland, from where and when did she sail from prior?,and when did she arrive there?. Also was it just a short re-fuel and supply, or was there a problem with her? john

Hi Al, I think you are referring to 'Enemy Below' 1957, Robert Michum, thats Curd Jurgens (U-boat) is trapped under water, he as lost the faith in the war, and i think he sends fuel and othe rebris to the surface, the part about putting a live man in the torpedo tube, and he survived, is imagined, I would have thought. Regards John

Hi, most interesting, both the IXB boats built by the same firm at Bremen, while the VIIC boats were built by the same firm at Wilhelmshaven, with the IXB, having their keels laid one year apart, while the VIIC boats were three years apart. regards john

Is there any specific reason that U 64 and U 124 had the same number (M 00 412)?, Kptlt Wilhelm Schulz, was the initial C/O of both boats, and U 64 had been lost before U 124 was commissioned> John

Hi Rainer, just one last, question, with U 124 in Feb 1942, I thought she had a problem with her radio recievers and returned,I had previously noted in the uboatarchive in (BDUKTB30304, she is listed as having sailed on the 21st with UA, and having returned with UA,on the 22nd, being in port (Lorient), and listed as at sea again the next day? john

Hi Rainer, thankyou, for that explanation, although, as seen with the losses of the two U-Tankers U 461, U 462 and the U 504, numbers did not always guarentee safety. Regards john

Hi Rainer, I have been doing a little bit more on aborted patrols, and found on three occasions, when another boat sailed with a IXB boat, that boat also aborted on the same dates, U 103 & U 525 on 25/07/43-26/07/43, U 123 & U 539 on 29/12/43-30/12/43 and U 124 & UA on 21/02/42-22/02/42. I have not checked other boat sailings, but was sabotage a major concern at Lorient, during the ab
