Thankyou Roland, I do not have access to the mentioned KTB, I noticed she sailed on that date, but with the time period given I assume he did not sail with her, and did the C/O get a reprimand for this breech of security. ? - john

Thankyou for that, reading more about this man, he apparently liked to live life to the full and despite his position within the Nazi party he was always looking for populist public relation stunts. As yet no U-boat number. john

While reading 'The Wages of Destruction' by Adam Tooze, an excellent book describing how the German economy coped during the Nazi era, mentioned was Gauleiter Fritz Sauckel who as a stowaway was on one of the first U-boats sent against the Roayal Navy. Although no date is mentioned, as anyone heard of stowaways on U-boats? - john

Hi Andy, Although the spider design is very similar, however she is not a type VIIC, deck too narrow and the conning tower is one of a smaller coastal submarine. having checked the index in Rossler's book, she may may not be even German. the question could be resolve by e-mailing the adress on the site. Certainly not a common submarine.

Very informative books I recommend are, 'Ultra goes to War' by Ronald Lewin, 'Ultra at Sea' John Winton,'Seizing the Enigma' David Kahn, 'Voices o

Hi Paul, although the KTB was altered, the deception was doomed because of two reasons; the actual alteration was apparently so obvious that changes had been made, but more damming was the fact that the shooting report (Schussmeldungen) had not been altered before it had been handed in. Therefore any one curious could easily match up the report to the loss of the Ganda.john
