Looking at finding individual submarine war diaries, submarine flotilla diaries, etc for Italian units. Is there a finding guide similar to the ones published for German naval records?

To add to this thread about the vessel identity. Appears the Waterford Sinking Disaster Commemoration Committee and Richard McElwee, who wrote The Last Voyages of the Waterford Steamers, identify the vessel described by Hashagen as the Coningberg not the Formby. I think an issue with that identification is Hashagen mentions a page later sinking another vessel within a short span, 24-36hrs. I

Would a surfaced submarine raise the search periscope to its maximum height and use it for search as well? Have not read that in Ger. memoirs. Well I think some USN subs did in WW2.

Recently saw on the Net a pic of what is purported to be U-28 sporting checkerboard pattern paint scheme on hull and tower. Anyone familiar with this? Was it experimental testing? Used on patrol? Appreciate in advance.

There is a photo circulating around the Internet showing Carpathia sinking. Shows peacetime colors and no stern gun. If anyone has the loss report, was Carpathia repainted in wartime all grey and armed with a 4.7" on the stern? Here is a link to the pic: Under the headline The photos taken from the surfaced submarine which sank the ship show a dark vessel and are indistinct. O

Read once of a convoy of tankers which was severely mauled. The ships were bound for Operation Torch and the resulting fuel loss stymied the Allies for a few months or so the author claimed. Anyone else heard of this? Also read that the 6 million or so tons sunk in 1942 delayed any possible landing in Europe by a year. Anyone else read of this and confirm by solid sources?

I was reading Richard Hartmann in U-49 returned from a patrol in May 1917 with the first report of a depth charging. Is this correct? If so, Do we know which vessel delivered the depth charging that he later reported on? Apparently previous depth charge targets did not survive. I read DCs used in March 1916 against U-68 vs. Farnborough. Also read UC-19 in Dec. 1916 was the first confirmed DC o

Served in the Med. Said he could always tell because something was off with them. Does anyone recall his name? I read it and now cannot find the source. I should have jotted it down at the time.
