There is a lot of background on this incident published on this site and in the numerous issues of the Naval Airship Assoc. magazine, The Noon Balloon. The Mt. Desert Islander newspaper did a 3 part story about 2 years ago that covered all the discrepancies in the official findings and there were many. Bear in mind that a month after the allies landed in France on D-Day and Roosevelt and Churchil

Due to a computer glitch, Naval Historian Paul Lawton has asked that I post this message on his behalf: Please GOOGLE these two items: Subsearesearch-Links-Project U-233 and Subsearesearch-Links-Operation CA-35. The first link regards their alleged discovery to have been the wreck of the U-233 in Casco Bay, in the Gulf of Maine several hundred miles from where she was actually sunk, off Sab

On the US east coast, harbor defenses were guarded by so-called "Gate Examination Vessels." These were small, armed ships, sometimes converted lightships such as the Nantucket (LV-112). They were armed with a 3" deck gun and several 0.50 cal. heavy machine guns, painted grey, had their hull portholes blanked off and light and RDF beacons removed. The Nantucket was taken off her sta

Would suggest you "search" this site for many messages about the USN K-14 incident. And, the U-233 was inbound when it was sunk, after the K-14 went down. There has been considerable research done on this.

All evidence points to U-233 being inbound at the time. However, why was the USS Card Task Group sent out to intercept her? What put the TG on alert for a U-boat in that area? Determining what other U-boat was in the area is the final sticking point. Also, why was that area of Maine so popular for U-boat activity? One month after the K-14 incident there was an attempt to land a saboteur, Oskar Ma
