I have contacted the German Government and I have related part of my father's story about the sinking of U-47. I have also contacted the New Zealand Shipping Company requesting a copy of the "Ship Log" for the month of March 1941 if it still exists. These pages should have the Lat/Long of the incident. If all the information I have gathered is correct then the U-47 was sunk,

It is interesting to note that 212 of the medical staff lost when the Centaur sunk were from the suburb of Corrimal NSW, Australia. I think they found her off Danger Point, Queenland 25km 2,000 to 3,000 feet down in a trench.

Rainer, Thank you for the info on the pictures of the MV Kiamata. It is interesting that the damage shows the flattening of the bow plates, I forgot to mention that my dad said that they crashed into and steamed over the top of the uboat. So the damage on the bow could be the imprint of the conning tower. Repair were done in Halifax then the Kiamata sailed to New Jersey and a new bow

On the 4th April 1941 the MV Kiamata reached Halifax with a gaping hole in the Bow. The Newspaper cutting states " The sub started shelling us" "but we escaped in the dark. The sub is probably a goner" Could the U-Boat have been U-47 as this vessel went missing around this time. Peter, The captain of U- 518 1942 was Fredrich - Wilhelm Wissmann 16/12/1915 - 9/9/1963 There are about 7 surviving crew members from U-518 of varying ages. U-518 was sunk in 1945 see this web site, lots of info I found this out by typing U-boat and u-518 on google On a side issue my great uncle was an Australian Air Force mechanic in Darwin . Peter, You could try the Australian War Memorial records. naa.gov.au My dad was on 5 Merchant ship during the war MV Kiamata 1941 -1942 Dad's (William Crawford Scott Born 13/10/1913 ) First voyage out of Liverpool March 1941 near Azores ran over U-Boat (Unknown Number). G'Day From Australia, My Dad was the Radio Officer and Acting Medical Office on the MV British Promise when the ship was torpedoed 21/11/1942.
