Peter,
The captain of U- 518 1942 was Fredrich - Wilhelm Wissmann 16/12/1915 - 9/9/1963
There are about 7 surviving crew members from U-518 of varying ages.
U-518 was sunk in 1945 see this web site, lots of info
I found this out by typing U-boat and u-518 on google
On a side issue my great uncle was an Australian Air Force mechanic in Darwin . He worked on Sunderland and Catalina planes
