My dad was on 5 Merchant ship during the war
MV Kiamata 1941 -1942
Dad's (William Crawford Scott Born 13/10/1913 ) First voyage out of Liverpool March 1941 near Azores ran over U-Boat (Unknown Number). Destroys bow of Kaimata. New Bow fitted NY.
Return to Liverpool. Liverpool Air raid nine nights in a row. An ammo ship near dad's ship explodes. Multiple shell hole in in dad's cabin. dad had just left the ship and was blown up and landed about 30ft. Told to leave the area.
Rejoined ship week later and went to halifax for repairs. Repairs complete Kiamata makes for Melbourne via Panama. Shell shock set in but dad remains on duty. Cleared by MO in Melbourne Normal duties.
Melbourne to Adelaide to Bone(North Africa) Pick up the last of the Rat of Torbruk to Ceylon then to Fremantle Nov 1941
Nov 1941 tie up to the same Bollard as the HMAS Sydney in Fremantle 11/11/1941 left for Melbourne - break down Great Australian Bight 19/11/1941 - Rigged sails (have pictures) and sailed into melbourne Harbour 7/12/1941. 8/12/1941 Melbourne paper prints article about merchant ship sailing across Bight to Melbourne.
8th June 1942 Sail into Sydney Harbour as Japanese Sub shells Eastern Suburbs of Sydney. Leaves Sydney for Port Kembla and the ship is reformatted into a general cargo ship All the matresses that the troops use are given to Wollongong to sell. Ship sails south and east to the Horn then sails up the to Peru. Peru to Havana. Havana to NY. NY to Liverpool Discharged from Kiamata. August 1942
MV British Promise 21/11/1942 attacked by U-518 - hole hole big enough to drive 2 double decker buses through. Limp into NY couple of days later for repairs.
