Hello Don

I don't believe my luck here. In the last few days I have been investigating U-518 as it has a special meaning to me. On 27 June 1943, my father Flt Lt B E H Layne of New Zealand, attached to 201 Sqdn, was commanding Sunderland W6005 on a 17 hour patrol and engaged and attacked U-518. I have photos taken of the attack.

Three days later while limping back to port the U-Boat was apparently attacked by an RAAF Sunderland and reports I have seen say the Sunderland was shot down whereas others say it was not damaged. I have been looking to see where I may be able to verify these reports. Dad died four years ago and would have now been 93.

If you have any ideas as to who I should contact I would be most appreciative.

I look forward to hearing from you. Peter Layne, Wellington N Z
