Hi Bruce I checked the KTB of U96 for dates and places that you requested. I was doing some research in the Deutsches U-Boot-Museum-Archiv and discovered that the KTB for U96 ended in February 1943. U96 was removed from combat duty and transferred to training duties as a school boat. I found no evidence that U96 was involved in evacuation of the Eastern Provinces. There was no KTB record boo

Hi Rainer I have just returned from the Deutsches U-Boot-Museum-Archiv. I have searched the KTB of U-96 and discovered that there are no more entries after February 1943. I did further searches but could find no evidence involving U-96 in the evacuation. I was informed by my German Friend that the following U-boats all left Pillau in January 1945 with refugees and were landed in Kiel. U56,57,

Hi Stuarty Sorry to hear about your grandfather Hans Puls. He would have known Volkmar König also from U99 who sadly passed away on the 22nd.August 2008 in Kiel at the age of 87. I think there might be one survivor left from U99,but I am not certain. Kind Regards Denis Martin

Hi John I know that some U-boats were involved in the evacuation. The evacuation started towards the end of 1944, so it could be possible that U96 did help. See book "U-boats under the Swastika" by Jak P.Mallmann Showell see chapter Death with Dignity the last two pages. Also see book "Neither Sharks nor Wolves" by Timothy P. Mulligan reference on page 86. I will be meeti

Hi All Does anyone have any information on U96 helping in anyway in the evacuation of civilians across the Baltic Sea. The Kriegsmarine's biggest battle towards the end of the war was to partake in the evacuation of the Eastern Provinces. Any help would be appreciated. Regards Denis Martin

Hi MPC and VEK With reference to Peter Hansen the author of "Execution for Duty", Hansen hardly includes any German sources among his references. One would expect an author of a work like this to have visited several important German Archives where original material might be stored, but there is no reference to any such source. I have read this book but would not recommend it. R

Dear Guy I was sorry to hear of the death of Volkmar König. He was known as "KING" to all his friends. I have many happy memories meeting with King on may holidays in Germany. I always enjoyed watching the many interviews that he gave on the different TV Channels Discovery and History Channels. I extend my sympathy to his wife Dorothee and all his family. He was a good friend.

Hi Kevin VEK has given a good description of the Schnoor. I would recommend a good restaurant. It is called Restaurant Katzencafe it is hidden between very small alleys in the Schnoor quarter. My wife and I had a memorable meal there, the food was good and the staff were friendly. Kind Regards Denis

Hi Dean From outside Hamburg Airport you can take the Bus to Kiel. The bus is called the Kielius and the bus company name Autocraft appears on the front. The journey takes 1 hour and 35 minutes. You could also get the train from Hamburg to Kiel. You go to Hamburg Railway station called the Hauptbahnhof. The train journey takes about 1 hour and 15 minutes. Hi Kevin You are right about Fink 2 bunker there is not too much to see but I am glad that I visited the sight anyway. The Wilhelmsburg Flak Tower Air Raid shelter in Hamburg is worth seeing. You mentioned Bunker Valentin in Farge. This is well worth visiting, you can see right into the bunker. Bremen is a lovely city easy to get around. Don't forget to visit the Schnoor quarter in Bremen

Hi Kevin In northern Germany it is also worth a visit to Laboe near Kiel to see U-995 and to see the U-boat Memorial at Möltenort. From Hamburg to Kiel on the train takes 1 hour and 16 minutes. From Kiel to Laboe you can by boat or bus. I recommend taking the boat, it takes 30 minutes to get to laboe, you might get the chance to see some interesting boats as there is a naval base at Kiel.

Hi Kevin I note that you plan to visit U-Boat bunker Valentin in Bremen-Farge. I visited this Bunker last year. I can recommend a good hotel at a reasonable price in Bremen. The hotel is called City Partner Hotel Residence and is located about 7 minutes walk from the Raiway Station. My wife and I stayed in this hotel and found it good value for money. Farge is very close to Bremen. It is a lov

Hi All I have just recently returned from the North of Germany. While on holidays there one of my U-boat friends told me that the dagger belonging to Wolfgang Lüth has been sold for US$200,000. It is a pity that this item has not ended up in a museum for enthusiasts to visit and admire. Regards Denis Martin

Hi John Sorry to hear that your hotel in Hamburg does not sound good.In all big cities there are good areas and bad areas. If I were staying I would book into the Radisson SAS Hotel in Hamburg as it is situated in a nice location close to the Alster lake and not far from the Main Railway Station. If you check Aer Lingus website for flights to Hamburg, they also recommend Hotels which are usual

Hello VEK The Irish Government is cracking down on drinking on the streets as this sometimes leads to anti-social behaviour. "Craic" is having a few drinks with fun and laughter with friends usually in a pub or hotel bar/lounge and sometimes accompanied with music. Wishing you a Happy Easter Kind Regards Denis Martin

Hello Funkmeister I have a video which I recorded from the History Channel TV documentary which was made a few years back. The sinking of the "Wilhelm Gustloff" was a dreadful tragedy. It was terrible that so many innocent civilians women and children and also many young women from the Women's Naval Auxiliary lost their lives. Kind Regards Denis Martin

I always enjoyed reading his postings on the Forum and we corresponded with each other many times regarding our mutual interest U-boats. I had the good fortune to have met Barry a couple of months ago at the Dickie Rock Concert in Dublin. Barry was also a great musican. I wish to extend my deepest sympat
