With the advantage of a thorough prewar U-boat training, Otto Salman commanded U-52 very successfully for more than a year. In June 1941 he became a staff member of the BdU op (5. Asto), before joining the BdU org staff in 1943, where he remained to the end of the war. Otto Salman was, with Admiral Friedeburg, one of only two naval recipients of the Knights Cross of the War Merit Cross (Ritterkreuz des Kriegsverdienstkreuzes).
