After commanding the type IID U-boat U-142 school boat for two months at the end of 1942, Johann-Otto Krieg took over the type VIIC U-boat U-81 for 12 months service in the Mediterranean. He sank 15 ships, mostly small coastal sailing vessels, in her, earning the German Cross in Gold.

He left U-81 in January 1944 to join the K-Verband (Midget Submarine Group), and commanded K-Verband Flotilla 361 from March to July 1944, during which time he was awarded the Knights Cross. He stayed with the K-Verband as a staff and training officer until the end of the war.

After the war he joined the post-war German Navy, Bundesmarine, and later retired as Fregattenkapitän.
