Notes on event

At 22.02 hours on 28 March 1943 the unescorted and unarmed Rousdi (Master Nicolas Leondaras) and hit aft in the engine room by one of two torpedoes from U-81 while steaming on a non-evasive course at 6 knots about 10 miles northwest of Majdal, Palestine. The vessel disappeared in a great explosion and debris fell on the U-boat, wounding the war correspondent standing on the bridge slightly at the knee. The U-boat had missed the vessel with a first torpedo at 21.43 hours. The master was the sole survivor and was picked up after nearly 50 hours in the water by HMS Burra (T 158) (Lt W.J.C. Harrison, RNVR) in the evening on 30 March. He and the two sailors on watch on the bridge were thrown overboard by the explosion, but the others were not seen again.
