The Gridley class ships, 4 ships, was based on the Mahan class, using the same hull but only a single smoke stack and 16 torpedo tubes. They had a much improved power plants from the previous Mahan ships making them considerably faster.

Gridley class destroyer made the highest recorded speed of any US Navy destroyer.
