I just checked some dates on some of my dad's letters home, and I am beginning to wonder whether the date on the citation is indeed wrong. One of my dad's lettera to my grandfather is dated 7-3-43. It talks in veiled terms about this incident, and mentions that "tomorrow is the Fourth". I am beginning to wonder if the event took place in late June, 1943. Do you have any record of a damaged British cruiser crossing the Atlantic in late June 1943?
One thing is for sure. A few months after this incident, my dad was chosen to attend a course at the Navy War College in Newport, Rhode Island prepatory to becoming an aide to Admiral Richard Connoly in the Pacific theater. My father always said it was the citation deriving from this surface fight with the sub that got him the notice necessary tp secure this desirable post.
