Hello Craig,
I'm not that far from you: Tonawanda, NY (suburb of Buffalo).
It appears very unusual that a crippled cruiser would be escorted by only a minesweeper, normal procedure (at least on the british side) was to allocate at least 3 escorts for such vessels (one ahead, one on each beam), particularly if the cruiser's speed was reduced by the damage, thus preventing her from maneuvering under attack.
I have been unable to obtain any info from any other source on this incident, hopefully if you can get a copy of Direct's log it will shed some light on the subject. At this juncture I am forced to hoist the white flag.
