Johann-Otto Krieg left the U-81 in January 1944 and then joined the midget submarine service and was Commander in the K-Verband Flotilla 361 from March to July 1944. During that time he was awarded his Knights Cross. He served as a staff and training officer in the midget submarine service (K-Verband) until the end of the war.
