uboat.net in 1998

It's customary (at least in my country) to look back during each new turn around the almight sun (i.e. every new year). This is an overview of what we did in 1998 and what we did not :) This is not a complete listing but rather the biggest elements of a very busy year indeed.

Enough said, onto the listing.

• All U-boat profiles (roughly 1300 files) were edited in some way in 1998. Many had new fates, small bugs fixed and new information was added to a great number of them. This of course took major effort but will continue in 1999 since this is really the foundation for the entire site.
• The site grew by almost 600 pages to 2334 pages. We also added almost 500 photographs.
• Opened the Fighting the U-boats section on 8 Feb. At the end of the year it contained almost 130 pages. It will probably at least double in 1999.
• Added a History section. This will be a massive section as time goes on.
• Created an Archive for What's New. This way one can trace what's been happening on the page since 1996, month by month.
• We added 38 U-boat Commander profiles for a total of 153. In April we finished the last Knights Cross winners page (144) for the U-boat force.
• Added some 100 new books to our files. In April we made an agreement to make it possible for uboat.net's visitors to buy their books right through the site. This has proven successful.
• Number of daily visitors doubled from 1100 to 2220 in 1998.
• Added 12 maps of various items.
• Book reviews grew from 2 to 19.
• We read about 52 new Commanders of the Week.
• Expanded the Gallery by over 100 photos.
• Added 45 Emblems, will organise this into new section in early Jan, 1999.
• The whole site was redesigned, it will happen again in 1999.
• We confirmed the fate of the elusive U-Who as U-869 on 27 June. uboat.net was probably almost the first serious source to do so.
• We published the story on the discovery of Wilhelm von Trotha's body on 7 Nov.
