The database work
We made more than 6065 updates to our databases during the year, this includes most of our work but not all of it (not every update/addition is recorded but most of them).
Some highlights from the database work during 2001:
- 1 Nov. The U-boat of the Day feature was launched. It's a simple selection that chooses a new U-boat every day thus linking to many U-boats that deserve attention but perhaps never get any.
- Oct. A lot of energy and time was spent on the new Convoy battle database, it was not possible to complete in it before the end of the year but it will be opened in early 2002, January probably. On 17 Oct all the older convoy battle pages were rewritten to use this new database.
- 10 Oct. We opened the completely re-written Photo Gallery. At the time it contained 232 photos (the version in the Conning Tower contained additional 17 images in 2 extra galleries). This enabled us to throw out over 270 old HTML pages and thus reduce the workload volume a lot.
- 6 Oct. We launched the new look of uboat.net - which I hope will make it a lot easier to navigate and use. It took some 30 hours of work to install this on the site (I had been using many different methods of applying the older look and it took this time to clean it all up).
- 4 Oct. The Photo database was opened. This is a very large and powerful members-only section that had been much longed for :)
- 29 Sept. uboat.net was moved to a new and better server which was a big job but less than I original feared (I really hope this is not becoming a once-a-year thing for us! :)
- 10 June. Opened the new Articles section within the Conning Tower. It features comprehensive articles specially written for the CT.
- 12 May. The uboat.net development machine (not the server) suffered a major hardware failure. This cost me lots and lots of work (I back the databases up of course, and most of the other files but there is always something that's gonne get lost in a disaster like this).
- 18 March. We added a small new section called the Announcement board to the site. It's a bulletin-board style page.
- 18 Feb . The long awaited members area, the Conning Tower, was finally launched. It has been very popular and we've had great feedback on it.
We added 142 books to our databases in the year 2001. Also added more than 81 book covers. 159 entries were added to our Books errata database.
We also added 37 book reviews to the site.

We've added or edited 0 movie files during the year.Misc
- The site grew by over 12000 pages to its current size of 18000 pages.
- We read about 52 new Commanders of the Week and 52 Emblems of the week.
